Recent Pick Ups

Well, since I've been home so much lately, I've been buying a little more.

A while back I posted about picking up my first 1963 Pepsi Colt .45 panel.  I was able to pick up three more panels recently.

I've also picked up a bunch of 1951 Topps Red Backs recently to start that set.  What a cool set that is.  It has a total of 54 cards in it due to two variations.  I now have eighteen of them.  Here is an example.  There are also Blue Backs but they are much more difficult to complete and I am not working on them.

The cards are small at only about 2 x 2 5/8  inches.  The were originally packed with two cards attached together in pairs that were perforated.  You'll notice that this one has the little tabs of the perforations at the bottom.

I also picked up a bunch of 1968 Topps Game cards for my second set.  I started a second set so I could actually play the game with my son.  It's a fun game to play and a fun set to put together so I figured what the heck, let's do another one.

I also picked up a few more 1969 Nabisco Team Flakes.  I really like that set a lot.  I have half the 24 card set now.  I prefer the cards to have nice big yellow borders, but I'll take what I can get.  Here is an example of what they look like.

Then my favorite new pick up recently was, of course, another E98.  This one is an orange background (my first orange) of Johnny Kling.

I am really getting into the E98s lately.  I've read that the commons are actually tougher to come by than the HOFers which would make sense since I have more HOFers than commons at this point.  I'm thrilled to have this orange background, I just think it looks so nice.

Well, those are some of my newest pick ups.  I hope you like them.

Enjoy the hobby all...it's a great one.

Recent Pick Ups

Had a couple recent auction wins come in and another eBay purchase.

Here are my newest pick ups.  Two lots from the recent Sterling Sports Auctions.  The first lot was this sweet little double card pleasure.

First of the two is this 1910 e93 Standard Caramel of Davy Jones.  This is a dupe for me so either this one or the one I already have will hopefully be traded for an e93 common that I still need.  Let me know if you want to trade.  🙂

The second one is this 1910 e98 Anonymous Set of 30 card of Bill Dahlen.  This one is in sweet shape I must say.    Oh well, at least it checks one of the wantlist.

The next lot that I won was actually a really nice looking card except that it has writing on the back where someone checked off the cards they collected from the checklist.

This is another 1910 e98 of the Larry McLean variety.

I was surprised I won both of these lots for the winning amounts.  The McLean is not for trade or sale, but the Dahlen could be pried from my collection with the right offer.

The last recent pick up is another sweet Mark Teixeira game used auto.  This one a 2005 Upper Deck Trilogy bat/jersey auto numbered to 75.

I really enjoy adding these to my collection.  Some sellers ask crazy prices for these Teixeira cards, but you can find really nice ones for very affordable prices.  I just wait for a good deal and jump on it.

So those are my newest pick ups folks.  I hope you like them as much as I do.

Mail Day...Again

I received several more packages in the mail today.

So I have been on a little buying spree lately and today was a good day at the mailbox.

First up is this quad relic Teixeira.

This is a 2007 UD Premier Remnants Quad Jersey.

I have another one of these that says MARK instead of 1B23 so it's cool to get another one that is a little different.  This card came not in a toploader, but in a penny sleeve between two pieces of cardboard.  Really?  Not even a toploader?  Oh well, at least it arrived safely.

Next up is an auto/jersey card of Teixeira.

This one is a 2003 SPx Young Stars.  I am a big fan of the auto/relic cards so it's nice to get another one.  This is numbered to 1295. It did come in a toploader.

Next is what?  Yes, another auto/jersey card of Teixeira.

This one is a 2004 Upper Deck SPX Swatch Supremacy and is numbered to 999.

Next is a nice prewar pick up.

Another E98 HOFer in the form of a Johnny Evers PSA 1(MK).  Obviously the MK qualifier is for the W.G. stamped on the front and the star that was scratched into it as well.  I don't care about those things though.  I'm just glad to have it.

I also received the following three cards in one puffy.

These are 1934-36 Batter Ups.  Nice poor condition ones like I like 'em.

So that was my mail day today.  Not bad huh?  It's nice getting mail.

A look at the 1910 E98 set

With my recent pick up of my E98 Bresnahan I felt like showing all of my 5 examples that I currently have and talk a bit about the set.

It is commonly called the Anonymous Set of 30 as the manufacturer is not listed on the back of the card.  This isn't uncommon for cards from this era.  With several E98s including a stamp on the back from Old Put Cigars some refer to the set as the Old Put set as well.

The cards with the Old Put overprint sell for a premium in the open market and are scarce, but they can be found.

The backs of the cards have a numbered checklist but the cards themselves are unnumbered.  It is also full of HOFers and big names like, Mathewson, Wagner, Cobb, Walsh, Young, Lajoie and Connie Mack to name a few.

They also come in different color backgrounds; red, green, blue and orange.  I'd personally like to acquire at least one of each color and so far only have red and green.

There was a huge significant find of E98s in 2012 in Defiance, Ohio, from a family who previously owned a meat market.  This find was called the Black Swamp Find (BSF) and cards that were graded from the find have this provenance on the flips.  These cards were all in superior condition with many grading 8s, 9s and 10s.  This inflated the population of the series considerably and the once scarce cards became almost common as a result.  I still like the pre-BSF cards in lesser condition the best.

Some have questioned the authenticity of the BSF cards and think they may have been printed more recently and are not genuine while many others this that is incorrect.

My cards are obviously not BSF cards and were part of the smaller population of E98s that existed before the find.

Like the name says, there are 30 cards in the set.  The Tenney card has his name misspelled Tenny and the Cy Young card is actually that of Irv Young.  Since I refuse to pay Cy Young prices for an Irv Young card, I will never actually complete this set.

Here is the checklist for the set:

I really like how they look in the SGC slabs and try to find them graded that way, but I couldn't turn down the raw Ford for the price.

I hope you like this set as much as I do and enjoyed seeing mine.
